Fuller lips are becoming more and more popular, while trout pouts are out. Making sure you get the full, luscious lips of your dreams requires the right dermal fillers as well as a skilled physician, says Dr. Guljeet Sohal, owner of Balle Bliss luxury med spa in Cypress, Texas.
Lip enhancement is a fairly straightforward non-surgical cosmetic procedure that has become more and more popular over the years. At Balle Bliss med spa, we use one of two dermal fillers, either Juvederm or Restylane.
Both of these fillers are derived from non-animal sources, made out of hyaluronic acid. I personally prefer Juvederm. Restylane has a small amount of crystals within it, some patients have told me they can feel the crystals in their lips. It’s a little bit grainier, and not so appealing for that reason. Also, I have much more experience using Juvederm to enhance lips.
Temporary Results
But keep in mind that both give only temporary results, and will require touch-ups to maintain the look. To keep your mouth looking good, you’ll have to come back regularly – Juvederm can last up to 12 months, while Restylane lasts from six to nine months.
I like to outline the border of the lips first, the upper and the lower lip. Then depending on the client’s preference I plump their lips up however big they want them. The usual rule of thumb, however, is that the top lip should be one third the size of the bottom one, so that the end result is one-third and two-thirds.
Size DOES Matter
Occasionally I get patients who want very big lips, which I believe would look out of proportion with the rest of their features and face. Sometimes I try to talk them out of it because I don’t want them to walk around looking silly. I also don’t want somebody saying, “Which doctor did she go to?”
But at the end of the day, I have to give them what they want, within parameters of safety, obviously, or else they will go somewhere else to get it. Most patients tell you they want you to do what you think is best. Others say no no no, just do it the way I say. I always try my best to make them look good, not silly.
When having a lip enhancement done, the main thing to remember is that as you age you lose volume in your lips, so putting back even a little bit of that volume will reduce your facial age by several years. When done right, it’s definitely worth it.
