Unless you happen to be independently wealthy, hiring a limousine is something that you’re likely to do only once in a very great while. As a result, you might not know just what types of questions to ask before committing to a particular company and putting down a deposit. Chris Welsher, owner of the Missouri-based company Murcielago Limos, offers some advice to customers as to what questions they ought to ask before making their first limousine reservation.
Do you have insurance and are you DOT certified?
It is important for a customer to ensure that his limousine company of choice has proper insurance, as well as a Department of Transportation (DOT) number. If an accident occurs and the limousine in question is not properly insured, then the passengers involved might not be covered in the event of injury. Additionally, for the safety of the passengers, it is important that the company in question come with the backing of the DOT.
Are your drivers experienced?
When it comes to limo drivers, it’s not enough to simply have the proper licenses. A good limo company will only hire drivers who are experienced driving limousines and transporting multiple passengers at a time.
What is your cancellation policy?
Due to the nature of the business, many limousine companies do not have a cancellation policy; rather, once a deposit is put down, it cannot be returned or refunded even with a certain amount of notice. Before you start reading off your credit card number, make certain that you are aware of and comfortable with the company’s cancellation policy.
What does your fee include?
This is an important one. Some companies might try to entice you with a price that is lower than those of your competitors. However, that price might not include fuel surcharges, taxes, and a tip for the driver. Ask for the big picture with all of the details before you commit to a deposit so that you’ll know how much money your night in the limo will cost you.
What do you provide in your limos?
Many customers of legal drinking age tend to incorrectly assume that limos – especially party limos – include alcohol as part of the package. In reality, it is illegal for limousine companies to provide alcohol to passengers. What they can provide is a stocked bar complete with glassware, ice buckets, and nonalcoholic mixers such as juice and soda. However, just because limousine companies can provide these amenities does not mean that they are part of the package. Ask about specifics so that you know what items you might need to bring for your big night out, and what items you can leave at home.
Is food allowed in the limo?
Many limousine companies have a strict “no food” policy. In order to properly plan your night out, you’ll want to know when and where you should plan to eat so that you’re not forced to go hungry at any point.
How do I know that my child will be kept safe on the way to his prom/dance/party?
This is a significant matter of concern for many parents with children going off with a group of friends for the night. It is up to the manager or owner of the limo company to review the itinerary in question with the parent in charge and make sure that the parent approves of such. A good limo company will also provide the parent in charge with a contact number for the driver so that he can get in touch at any point during the night.
As a customer, you have the right to get answers to these questions and any other questions you might have. A good limousine company will take the time to give you the facts that you need in order to make a wise and informed decision. Even if hiring a limo is something you’ll only do once in your life, the experience should be both safe and satisfying.
