Rather than allow the piles of junk in your house to fester and continue occupying valuable space, you’ve made a wise decision to hire a junk removal company to haul away all of your unwanted stuff. Now all you have to do is figure out what you truly want to get rid of, and get ready for your upcoming appointment. For a number people, professional junk removal is a new concept, and as a result, many are not quite sure how to prepare for the big day. Jim Skelton, the owner of Able Demolition, has spent years helping Maryland residents get rid of their junk. For a smooth and easy process, Jim suggests that customers take the following steps to prepare for their junk removal.
Designate an area for junk
The more compact your unwanted belongings are, the easier it will be for workers to identify them and haul them away as quickly as they can. If possible, choose one area of the house, such as the garage or basement, to store all of your junk. If you can’t do this, designate “junk areas” within each room to make the recognition process easier for the workers instead of leaving your junk interspersed with the rest of your belongings. While customers should do their best to isolate their junk, Skelton warns that safety should always take priority over efficiency. This means that if you aren’t strong enough to move certain piles of junk into a central location, then you should not attempt to do so. Those who work for junk removal companies are trained to lift heavy objects without injuring themselves; they also tend to be rather muscular to begin with. While you can – and should – gather up as many lightweight items as possible, you should never attempt to move anything that might cause you harm.
Label your junk accordingly
The best way to ensure that nothing valuable accidentally gets hauled away is to clearly indicate what stays and what goes. Implement a universal labeling system for all of your junk so that workers know what needs to be cleared out and what shouldn’t be touched. To eliminate confusion, use some sort of colored labeling system, such as placing yellow tape around the items that are to be removed. Simply writing the word “junk” in plain black ink on top of a box is less likely to catch a worker’s eye than a bright yellow tag.
Clear a path to any stairways or doorways that are likely to be accessed by workers
For the safety of the workers as well as your property, you’ll want to make sure that the workers can move about the house freely without having to worry about stepping on or knocking over something valuable. If you have photos or paintings hanging alongside your steps, then it’s a good idea to take them down prior to your junk removal appointment; otherwise, you run the risk of having them get accidentally damaged during the removal process.
By following these three simple steps, you can do your part to make your junk removal process as quick and painless as possible.
