Having Your New Home Painted Before You Move In

Dan Mahaney | October 1, 2009

You’ve chosen a home, you’ve gone through the paperwork, the meetings, and put your payment down – it’s yours. Congratulations! Now, the work begins. While you love the house, there are still things you want to do to make it your own. And you are not really feeling the previous owner’s decision to paint an undersea mural in the master bathroom. While there will inevitably be work to do once you move in and get settled, your real estate agent can arrange to have some of the bigger, more daunting jobs taken care of before you move in. So, when you walk in the walls will be the colors you want. CertaPro Painters franchise owner Dan Mahaney explains how.

The real estate agent selling a home will often contact a contractor or contractor as the house is going on the market, so that the home is in top notch condition when potential buyers come to see it. Chances are, when you go to look at a home, any actual damage or problem areas will have been fixed or replaced. But as far as decorating goes, no changes will be made until it is known who is buying the home. This is because the home should not be altered to anyone’s tastes but those who are moving in. So, while the real estate agent and the contractor have worked together to present a like-new, beautiful, perfectly functioning home, they have left the decorating and aesthetic appeal choices to the new owners.

Once the home has been purchased and the new owners decided, though, that doesn’t mean that the real estate agent and the contractor don’t still value the importance of having the home ready for these new owners. They understand the importance of lifting that stress for the buyers, making their lives and their move-in that much easier. Now, not only can the new owners cross a new paint job off their probably overwhelming to-do list, but it also feels more like they are moving into their home. The condition of redecorating may have also been worked into the buying agreement, making this service a bit more mandatory.

The contractor will perform all services possible for the new owners to make the home ready for them. The itself may involve more than . It could involve power washing the exterior to prepare for the exterior, it could involve sanding down and staining the deck, removing and replacing rotted wood, repairing the driveway, and removing any wallpaper in preparation for interior . These processes all involve thorough cleaning, attention to detail, consultation with the new owners to make sure everything done is what they want, and attention to cost – some costs may have been included in the cost of the home, other services may be extra work done that the new owners have elected to go forward with. The biggest difference between standard paint jobs and the jobs done for new homeowners is the timeline. The contractor often has a short amount of time to complete these services. The contractor offers the usual high level of customer service, plus the sensitivity to the expedition necessary when a home switches owners.
