How you take care of your skin before and after your medical spa treatment is just as important as the procedure itself. Dr. Brian Hurley is the owner of Illumination MedSpa in Irmo, South Carolina. The medical spa, located in the Columbia metropolitan area, offers alternatives to liposuction such as Lipo-Ex, Lipotherme, and Vaser Lipo, as well as procedures such as dermal fillers, facials, laser hair removal, laser vein removal, laser skin rejuvenation, and Botox. Here, Dr. Hurley gives pre- and post-care instructions that apply to several treatments.
Before your microdermabrasion, vibradermabrasion, laser skin rejuvenation, or chemical peel:
1. If possible, do not wear makeup to your treatment.
2. For one week before your treatment, avoid any irritants to your skin, such as any products containing Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolyc and salicylic acids, astringents, or vitamin C.
3. Do not wax, tweeze, or use a depilatory on treatment areas for one week prior to your treatment.
4. If you have received Restylane treatments or Botox injections, wait at least two weeks before getting vibradermabrasion (an exfoliation system that is an alternative to microdermabrasion).
5. If you have received a glycolic peel, wait at least one week before getting vibradermabrasion.
After your microdermabrasion, vibradermabrasion, laser skin rejuvenation, or chemical peel:
1. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds after treatment (we recommend this indefinitely). Wearing sunscreen daily with an SPF of at least 30 is vital to maintaining your improved skin.
2. For one week after your treatment, avoid anything that irritates the skin, such as any products containing Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolyc or salicylic acids, astringents, or vitamin C.
3. Do not wax, tweeze, or use a depilatory on treatment areas for one week after your treatment.
4. If you receive collagen treatments, these may be resumed 24 hours after treatment.
5. If you receive glycolic peels, these may be resumed one week after your treatment.
6. If you do not need makeup the evening after your treatment, it’s best to wait until the next morning.
7. Approximately 48 hours after your treatment, your skin may start to peel. This peeling will generally last two to three days. Do not pick or pull the skin.
