Avoiding Moving Scams

Thomas Fagan | December 2, 2009

With all of the expense of moving, it can be tempting to choose a moving company based solely on price. You may think you are getting a great deal and cutting corners, but you are taking a big risk. If you are planning a move and in the process of choosing a moving company, it is important to do your research and find a reputable company. Moving scams do exist, so arming yourself with the right information reduces the likelihood that you will be taken advantage of.

Thomas Fagan, vice president of Sales at Atlantic Relocation in Indianapolis, warns those who are searching the Internet for the “best deal.” He believes this is the number one way people get scammed. A moving company may sound great online, but Fagan points out they may not guarantee their cost. It is important to read the fine print on any estimate you are given. He also reminds those moving not to pay any money upfront because scammers will take a credit card number and disappear. Ask a moving company what national van line they are affiliated with because this is often a sign you can trust their services.

A Changing Field

The moving industry has changed over the years and some believe the increased competition among companies may have done more harm than good. Some who have worked with unscrupulous companies report they were given an estimate for moving goods, but no mention was made of additional and hidden charges. A company may move your goods from one location to another, but to actually have them removed from the moving truck would require an extra fee. Some blame the competitive nature of the moving industry for this and others just think people will take advantage of others whenever there is an opportunity to do so. Regardless of the reason, understand potential scams and be sure to ask, and get in writing, verification these hidden fees will not occur.

In order to protect yourself from potential scams, you can do a few things. The first, and most unlikely option, is to leave your belongings in one place and buy new ones upon arrival. This usually only works for those moving to countries where it is typical to purchase fully furnished homes. You can also sell your belongings and purchase new, but since this is often a pricey option, few choose to do so.

Doing It Alone

If you are young and you lack the material baggage of most households, you can choose to move your items yourself. You would not be the first twentysomething to pack up his car with everything he owns in the back seat and head across country. If you do have a full household, moving yourself is still an option, but it can be time-consuming, expensive, and in some cases, dangerous. You will have no recourse should items be broken or stolen, and you will be responsible for all packing and unpacking yourself.

Assuming you are going to use a moving company, take your time making your choice. Ask for references and be sure to contact these references or research their information carefully. You can also look up companies on websites for the Better Business Bureau to check their ratings and any possible complaints. Beware of companies you find online, or at least make sure they are not just listed online. Check the phone book, speak to others who have recently moved, and have the companies give you an estimate in writing. Often your real estate agent may be able to recommend a good moving company since they have regular experience working with those who need to move.

Once you are confident you have found a great company offering a good rate for your move, find out how long they have been in business, how many households they have moved, and ask for references. They should also have state and federal licenses, which you should be given in order to check their stats.

Reputable moving companies are out there and make an otherwise stressful time easier to endure. If you have a move coming up in the near future, contact Atlantic Relocation. They will offer a fair price and ensure your belongings are delivered to your new home in a safe and timely manner.
