Medical Spa Treatments You Can Do Over Lunch

Matthew Pruitt is the owner of NuVision, a boutique medical spa in Manhattan that offers a range of laser-based procedures including Lasik to BOTOX and other skin rejuvenation techniques. Here he discusses quick treatments that patients can undergo that deliver big results:

Because so many of the procedures that we do at NuVision take 45 minutes or less, it is actually quite common that our patients come in for a treatment on their lunch break and go right back to work afterward.

That really is the beauty of what a medical spa is able to provide. At a center such as NuVision, we can give patients a really good quality treatment using all the top levels of medical technology, in a period of time that is not going to take half a day—or more—like it might in an ambulatory facility.

A few of the most common lunchtime procedures that patients request are BOTOX, acne treatments, peels, or the Affirm treatments. Typically, when we do an Affirm treatment, where we are using significantly more laser energy, we will tell patients that they may want to consider scheduling their appointment at the end of the day. That way if we need to take a little more time with the procedure we have the leeway to do that. Other times, however, patients are comfortable taking the gamble and they are able to go right back to work afterward without any downtime whatsoever.

On the other end of the spectrum, patients who visit an ambulatory care center may have to spend half of their day waiting for their appointment and then undergoing the procedure to get the results that they want. And even after that, they will most likely need to spend a number of days recovering at home before they can get back to their everyday life routines and work.

So the medical spa really does fill that gap for people who don’t have a lot time by providing them with the good, solid outcomes that they desire without having to go under the knife in an operating room and without having to worry about significant downtime or missed days at work.

It is important to note, however, that there are times when medical spas make sense and there are times where surgery makes sense, depending on the procedure that a patient is requesting. That is why the skin analysis that we do in our office is so important to determine what procedure is going to give a patient the results he or she wants.

Not every patient who comes into a medical spa is going to be right for laser treatments, after all. There are some people for who the laser just is not going to be strong enough to achieve the type of wholesale treatment they are looking for—usually either to lift the face, lift the skin, or erase the specific types of wrinkles that they have. These are the times when a surgical approach is more appropriate. Of course, we are comfortable telling a patient when that is the case because we work with a plastic surgeon and we want every patient to achieve the outcome that he or she desires above and beyond anything else.

But for the most part, the procedures that we offer here at NuVision, and at other medical spas, are things that the majority of people can do during their hour-long lunch break and head right back to the office afterward without any downtime whatsoever.

He taught over 50 surgeons in the Northeast how to implant the latest in multi-focal lense technology. After a successful career as a consultant for AMO, Matt left to manage and develop what became the largest private LASIK practice in the Northeast. For 8 years as an ophthalmic LASIK technician, Pruitt helped countless patients regain their natural sight through LASIK. He has evaluated and assisted in more than 30,000 procedures.
