Aftercare in Medispa Treatments

Paula Gilmartin | October 13, 2009

One of the most important factors in successful skin health treatments is the care that is intended to follow the procedure. This aftercare ensures the greatest benefit from the treatment, and protects the skin during the time it may be particularly sensitive and vulnerable. Aftercare is so important, it should be explained prior to the treatment. A client should understand what is expected of him before he determines whether the procedure is right for them. He should understand how long the healing process will last, and how quickly he can return to regular activity following the procedure. A qualified medical spa like Dermalounge will offer aftercare instructions in writing so clients are sure to remember and understand what is required of them. Different treatments require different methods of aftercare. The level of invasiveness of the treatment will determine the degree of aftercare required. Listed below are a few common treatments and their required aftercare procedures:

Sunblock

It is important to keep in mind, regardless of the procedure, sunblock is your number one defense for keeping your skin as healthy as possible. Paula Gilmartin, regional manager and aesthetic nurse trainer at Dermalounge recommends an antioxidant serum be applied in conjunction with your sunblock. This boosts the effectiveness of the sunblock by five times, while also protecting against skin damaging free radicals.

Sun protection education is an important part of all Dermalounge treatment consultations. The various skin improvement procedures will mean nothing if you choose not to protect your skin from sun damage. Aftercare is an important part of any skincare treatments. Those undergoing procedures should understand what to expect, understand there are often mild side effects, plan their schedules accordingly, and keep skin gently cleansed and moisturized following their procedure. Following the directions of the skincare professional will ensure you get the most from your investment in your skin’s wellness.

Dermal Fillers

Treatments like Restylane require that patients avoid all exposure to sunlight and heat following their treatment. Procedures that involve dermal fillers can not be immediately followed by other procedures such as peels, tightening, resurfacing, and laser enhancements. The clinician may also advise patients to not excessively flex their facial muscles following the treatment. Sudden movement is not recommended for up to 24 hours following the procedure.

The area may be sore and it could be tempting to rub or massage the treatment area. This is not advisable as it could manipulate the gel that was injected beneath the skin, and it should be avoided for several hours following the procedure. If you are experiencing swelling, it may be helpful to sleep on two pillows, allowing the treated area to be elevated. Pain and redness can be reduced by the application of a cold pack. Follow any recommendations concerning application of the ice application. Some clinics recommend Arnica Montana, which is a European flowering plant that offers the same effect as ibuprofen and is a natural alternative to mild pain killers.

Hair Removal

It is important for the clinician to apply a moisturizer and sunblock following laser hair removal treatments. An icepack can be applied to the area if there is pain, redness, or mild swelling. This may last up to two hours, and the ice pack can be applied and removed throughout this time. Remember not to wax or pluck while undergoing your schedule of laser treatments. It is possible that crusting will occur in the area the laser was applied. An antibiotic cream can be applied to the area. Some clinics recommend aloe lotion or Desitin to prevent reactions. Do not pick or scratch at the treated area. A quality moisturizer will help with the exfoliation of the skin, sloughing away deadened hairs more quickly. Speak with your technician concerning the hair growth cycle if you are concerned about the effectiveness of your procedure.

Peels

Peels usually leave treated skin dry, red, and flaky. It is important that those undergoing chemical peels understand what to expect following the procedure. Superficial peels will require the patient to use sunblock and keep the skin moist. Patients should wash with a gentle cleanser and cool water. The clinic may offer a prescription for medicated ointment or a gentle moisturizer. Medium-depth peels will leave skin a deep red or brown shade, and the skin may have a scale-like appearance. It is important to avoid sunlight. Skin may be sensitive for up to two months following the peel. Before going outside, slather the treated area with sunblock and wear a hat or other protective covering.
