Ellipsis Points

Rules for Using Ellipsis Points

Ellipsis points (three periods in a row, without spaces) can be used to indicate the intentional omission of information or a pause in an otherwise complete thought. But use ellipsis points sparingly, as they don't always tend to look professional. And don't make the mistake of using ellipsis points in place of other punctuation marks, like commas.

Example
  • I assumed it was over, but you know what they say about assuming…
  • I thought we could make up for lost time…but apparently I was mistaken.
  • I considered going home first, but decided it would be better to just stop at the store.
