Matthew Pruitt is the owner of NuVision, a boutique medical spa with offices throughout the tri-state area that offers a range of laser-based procedures including Lasik to BOTOX and skin rejuvenation. Here he explains the ins and outs of what a medical spa really is.
Patients choose a medical spa because of the diverse services and because they want to know that they are being cared for by a doctor when they undergo many cosmetic procedures. Because laser treatments and other cosmetic procedures are not inexpensive, patients want to know that their hard-earned money is going into the hands of somebody who knows how to handle the technology that they are using. “Med spa” is a term that has kind of become a buzz word in the past few years, so people just throw it out there. But it doesn’t mean anything unless you have a medical practitioner or physician overseeing or performing the treatments.
These days, with all the different types of technologies that are out there being offered, many spas make big promises but fail to deliver the results. So patients look to us at NuVision to be the experts and know what is going on, specifically in the laser industry. They know that because we have trained surgeons on staff, that they are going to get the best outcome and that we are going to provide them with the best value for their money.
If you go to a day spa, they are typically going to not have made the investments in the types of technologies that we have at NuVision medical spa. We have spent close to $1 million in technology. And because we are LASIK experts and that is our background, we know that it is a technology that gets good results and good outcomes. Many, many women come in to NuVision and say, “I went to my dermatologist and they started using lasers, but the real thing I wanted was skin and treatments. From a medical perspective I didn’t get the results I was looking for.” When this happens, they turn to us for results.
We have doctors, we have a plastic surgeon, and we also have estheticians—and Dr. Jackson does the BOTOX treatments at our medical spa. So we have two surgeons and we have an esthetician on staff. Because our procedures are administered by a physician—and we hire surgeons, so they are all surgeons at NuVision—or the esthetician, who does treatments under the guidance of a surgeon, we can provide patients with a higher level of safety than they can find elsewhere.
When it comes time to select a medical spa, patients should be sure that the facility they select has a surgeon who is the medical director and that everything that is being done is being done under the guidance and the supervision of an MD. Commonly, patients will ask about this when they call to book an appointment for their first treatment at NuVision, and many want to know who does the treatments and who will be evaluating them. Asking and finding out this information is really critical when it comes to selecting the best medical spa.
