Perhaps the greatest fear people have of undergoing any sort of cosmetic surgery is of what people will say when the healing is done and the bandages are off.
What if I want a small cosmetic surgical procedure that, when completed, will not only help me look better but make me feel better? What happens if I have this surgery, look good and feel better, and then people say some cruel things? Will the rewards and benefits of my plastic surgery be enough to outweigh the negative comments?
It seems we’re all afraid of others’ opinions, especially in such a personal area like plastic surgery. But the sort of fearsome public opinion and commentary, like that of the often biting, bitter-tongued Hollywood gossip, usually exists only in the sycophantic circles that endlessly surround Hollywood stars.
Why, if I were Donald Trump - with all his money and power - I’d probably laugh heartily at all those hair and facelift jokes, maybe I’d even help write some!
A hair stylist once asked me if I thought the beautiful Connie Nielsen had work done.
“Has she had cheek implants? What do you think?” she said, before surreptitiously slipping me the ‘before and after’ photo.
“My…” I said, obviously a bit bored. I mean, why would I care? I knew Connie Nielsen to be a great actor and a consummate professional. Perhaps I’d have offered more of a reaction had Ms. Nielsen had a third arm attached or a second head or bunny ears and a cotton tail, or something similarly remarkable.
“Well,” the stylist remarked, snatching the photo back. “Sure looks like it to me!”
It was just gossip. Most gossip is just that - idle yapping about other idle yapping about some overheard yapping.
Anyone who reads or listens knows that for decades Hollywood Stars have used cosmetic surgery. Such surgical augmentation is, nowadays, more expected than spectacle. These days it is considered neither a walk on the wild side nor a dangerous leap of vanity to have plastic surgery. One only has to peruse the local TV Guide for a list of shows like “Nip and Tuck” to know that plastic surgery is part of the modern zeitgeist.
Even so, many of us remain concerned about what others will think.
So, the bandages come off and we face, for the first time, our own public of family, friends, acquaintances and strangers on the street.
If we opt for some cosmetic surgery that can provide us with a more personally comfortable appearance, we will probably never experience the post-op attention of a Hollywood star.
No one I have ever met who has had a proper consultation with a reputable plastic surgeon and then the planned surgery, has voiced a single regret. Of course, it is important to seek out the genuinely qualified, reputable cosmetic physicians - preferably in or close to your own community - that can provide proper pre-operation guidance, planned surgery and post-operation care.
Breasts can be firmed up without any great change of shape or size. Chins, necks, cheeks, noses, thighs, buttocks and even feet can be surgically augmented in subtle ways that improve tone and shape while restoring the proper, natural aspect of one’s body. For those of us who are older and merely wish to restore a bit of our once youthful appearance, the result of simply looking younger and fresher can be joyful.
Ultimately, whether your surgical augmentation or cosmetic enhancement results in a broadly noticeable change in your appearance or not, fearing what people will say, in this day and age, is a bit silly and self-defeating. Your family and friends will embrace you and your efforts for all the right reasons. Depending on the extent of your surgery, many friends and acquaintances may never notice anything more than a new, more confident you.
