What Are the Risks?
Gingival grafting does involve some discomfort and you can expect to experience some pain during your recovery period. You will likely have stitches that will need to be removed about one week after your procedure, and your dentist will probably want to schedule at least one follow-up visit to make sure the grafts and donor site are healing properly.
General anesthesia is not required for this type of procedure, so the risks commonly associated with surgery do not apply. However, infection can and occasionally does occur at either the donor or treatment site. Also, there is the slight possibility that the grafts will not “take,” and that the procedure will need to be performed again. This usually happens as the result of poor home care or trauma to the treated area. Smoking has a serious adverse effect on your gums’ ability to heal, so refraining from smoking after your procedure is strongly advised.
You will need to carefully follow your dentist’s instructions for home care in order to ensure that the treatment is successful in preventing further gum loss and that your gums do not become infected.
The Final Word
Although not without risk or discomfort, gum grafting may be your only hope if you’ve experienced major gum recession. It’s important to remember that the loss of gum tissue can seriously impact your oral health. If you’re not yet experiencing discomfort as a result of your gum loss, chances are good that you eventually will. Gum grafting is an excellent way to ward off periodontal disease and tooth decay, improve the appearance of your smile and help prevent further damage to your gums.
