Exotic Car Transportation: Don’t Waste Precious Miles

Exotic cars, they’re so… oh what’s the word… exotic? Luxurious? Naughty? In any case, they’re too beautiful to be seen by the mini-van drivers off I-95. So instead of wasting miles on your one-of-a-kind automobile, and causing your fellow drivers to get into a jealous rage that could end in a twenty car pile-up, why don’t you store it in the back of a semi the next time you need to take your beauty cross-country.

What is it?

An example of an exotic car about to be transported. Ideally the driver will exit the vehicle before transportation begins.

Exotic car transportation is similar to normal car transportation (but is extremely different from exotic dancer transportation). Basically, if you’re flying somewhere (for instance, from east coast to west coast) and you want to drive your own car when you get to said destination, then car transportation is the way to go. Instead of having to drive cross-country and potentially run the risk of listening to endless “summer fun mixtapes”, you can pay someone to do it for you. Except he won’t be driving your car and you don’t even have to make him mixtapes to listen to! Instead, he piles your car, as well as other clients’ cars, into the back of a semi-truck and transports them cross-country for you.

However, in the case of “exotic” car transportation, the stakes are raised. For those uninitiated, the term exotic car (or supercar) generally refers to high-end sports cars whose performance is considered superior to that of its contemporaries. These are classy cars here, we’re not talking about Cutlasses. Therefore, many companies specializing in exotic car transportation go the extra mile to ensure customers that their prized possessions will be treated with the utmost care. In some cases this may mean “enclosed” car transportation, which may in fact be the best option for exotic car transportation, especially if you’re worried about the condition your car will be in on that long trek.

Enclosed car transportation is a little more specific than car transportation, as it refers to your car being completely enclosed by solid masses on all sides (i.e. stored in the back of a semi). While some car transportation companies may offer partially enclosed services (stacking cars on top of one another like laundry, without any cover to shield them from inclement weather or tiny rocks) and others may offer a canvas or tarp to shield the cars (treating a Lamborghini like it was an above-ground pool), enclosed car transportation is the real deal. We’re talking unbreachable walls, ceiling, and floor, keeping cars safe from potential bad weather, as well as Gone in Sixty Seconds car-thief-Nicholas-Cage wannabes.

Who needs it?

Car transportation is ideal for those with exotic cars because those are the ones that are generally worth showing off. The point being, it may not be worth the trouble to ship out your ’96 Ford Contour, especially since that’s probably going to be the rental car you would get at the airport anyways. However, exotic cars are a different story. Maybe you’re moving across the country. Maybe you want to impress people on the LA Strip, or enter your fine piece of machinery in a car show/exhibit on the other side of the country. Hell, maybe you live in New Jersey and want to get in a Tokyo-drift style race with Jay Leno in Burbank. Unless you can afford to airlift your car, your best bet is transport by semi.

Benefits

The biggest benefit for those with exotic sports cars is that this form of transportation requires no extra mileage on your car, therefore keeping the resale value in check. This is also noteworthy for those with classic cars, who don’t want to rack up miles on it, especially if they’ve put in lots of time and money by reviving it themselves. There are also a few exotic car transportation companies, such as All America Auto Transport, who ship cars internationally with departures from chief U.S. ports.

Risks

Risks are generally minimal, especially with enclosed car transportation services. However, be aware that if there is nothing covering your car while it’s loaded on the back of a truck it can get dirty or become scratched by a number of things. Otherwise, it’s probably worth it to investigate any transportation company’s track record, just to make sure that they are in fact an insured, bonded, and licensed car transporter and not some Russian Mafioso planning to sell your car for parts. That’s highly unlikely, but still.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you have an extremely sexy-looking sports car and you need to transport it over a decent amount of miles, then exotic car transportation is the simplest way to get it done, with enclosed car transportation being the safest option available. That is, unless, the exotic car in question is the Delorean from Back to the Future, in which case you can just gun it to 88.
