Making a move soon? Inherited a house full of furniture from Aunt Betty? Found some great furniture deals but now you have too much? Whatever the reason, at some point in life, most everyone will need to rent a storage unit. Whether you desire temporary digs for your goodies or a longer relationship, storage space is a good idea. But before you lay down the cash for new digs for your extra stash, know how you can get the most storage for your buck. There are some things you can do to save a little money and stretch your dollar a little further.

First, here are some national price averages for storage units. The basic 5-by-10-foot unit will give you 50 square feet of storage space. You can fit quite a few boxes or a couple of pieces of furniture in this unit. The average cost for this small space is around $20 to $25 a month. You can also upgrade your storage space or storage unit to a 10-by-10-foot unit that will give you 100 square feet. This 100-square-foot unit gives enough room for several rooms of furniture and plenty of boxes. The average cost of this unit is around $35 to $45 a month. One of the largest units we found available is 20-by-40 feet and will give you a whopping 800 square feet of storage space. You can easily store an entire house of furniture in this unit, but it will run you a little more. These large units cost around $170 to $230 a month. These are basic prices but you can always find some great bargains by shopping around. Give your local economy storage companies a call and ask about their monthly specials.

Economy storage centers are very price competitive and most don’t mind matching a competitor’s price. There are some great promotions that you can turn into big savings. First is a free month or free months promotion. Lots of storage centers have move in specials offering the first month free. Ask your local economy storage center about referral promotions. Some offer free months or monthly credits towards your bill when you send the company business. It may well be worth telling a few friends about your local economy storage center to get a little shaved off your bill.

There are some money saving options you should look into when choosing an economy storage center. First is the climate control option. If you are just stowing furniture and non perishables, you won’t really need climate control. You can find this type of economical storage units at discounted prices. Next, be sure and ask about bringing your own lock. Some companies charge for locks. You could avoid a lock fee by providing your own lock for your unit. However be sure and check with the storage company before altering or changing your unit.

Contact your local economy storage center for more details about local rentals and promotions.
