Ready to feel good, green and rich? Conserving energy and resources isn't only good for our planet; it's good for your wallet, too! Finding new ways to keep costs down is something that small business owners are always thinking about. Being able to help the environment while you do it is a great added benefit. Here are five easy ways to add more “green” to your life.
Lighting. Now's your chance to see the light! The American Lighting Association says that 25% of an electricity bill emanates right from lighting. Compact Fluorescent Lamps or CFLs - those squiggly, round-shaped bulbs - last ten times longer and use less than a third of the energy of regular bulbs. The bulbs themselves might be more expensive, but they save you $$ on your energy bill long term.
Recycling Save a few trees and earn some money for your efforts. There are programs and organizations that will actually pay you for your company's recycled paper, aluminum, bottles, electronics and other recyclable products. Visit Earth911.com to search for a recycling program in your area.
Power Off Wasting energy is a total turn-off. You might think that switching off your power switch cuts off energy, but it’s not so. You must completely unplug your electronics, power strip and all. 8% of Americans' annual bill goes toward wasted electricity from keeping appliances plugged in. Solution? Simply unplug or turn the power switch off after your work day.
Appliances Buy Energy Star appliances for your office kitchen. Energy Star is a government-backed program that ensures you're being energy efficient with your purchases. These models are 10- 15% more efficient compared to regular models. Look for bright yellow stickers with the Energy Star certification, as well as additional labels like Intertek and Green Leaf Mark for independent environmental verification.
Water and Coffee Drink wisely. Tap water filters are more affordable and much better for the environment than bottled water. Also, install faucets that automatically shut off in bathroom and sinks. And what about everyone’s morning cup of Joe? Oprah discovered that her office spent $800 a week on disposable coffee cups. Make it mandatory that employees use coffee mugs around the office, and come up with a company-wide reward with your savings at the end of the year.
Every green act counts, no matter how small or large. Try these ideas and earn extra money while taking better care of the environment. Before you know it, your small business will be a green machine.
